Mondain / mundane

　　“Mondain”和“mundane”是一对来自拉丁语的同源词，也是一对“假朋友”：小心上当哦!

　　“Mondain”一看就知道和“monde”(世界)有关啦。实际上，拉丁文的“mundanus”的意思，就是“世界的，人世间的，世俗的”(of this world, worldly, secular)。 这里的“世界，世间”是与宗教中的“天国，彼岸”相对应的(宗教总是讲“出世，脱俗”的吧?)。“Mondain”的事情，就是与宗教无关的“俗事”。

　　但“俗事”和“俗事”不一样啦。

　　在法语中，“mondain”的“俗事”，开始是指“上流社会”的社交活动(vie sociale de la haute société)。上流社会的绅士淑女嘛，总是要寻欢作乐，出风头的——盛宴呀，舞会呀，沙龙什么的。因此，“mondain”后来就有了“爱交际，善于社交的”的意思，常译为英语的“social，sociable”等。

　　“Mondain”也可以作名词，意思是“爱社交，喜欢寻欢作乐的人”。这种人爱交往，追求奢华，享乐，手上总是端着一杯香槟酒。

　　(Un mondain, c'est quelqu'un qui vit de façon mondaine, soit luxueuse, bourgeoise, et qui a toujours une coupe de champagne. ^v^)

　　“Ce sont des gens très mondains. ”

　　这句话，可以有两种理解：

　　1. 这些人常出入上流社会。

　　They're real high society people /they move in high society.

　　2. 这些人很喜欢社交。

　　They're very sociable people /they're real socialites.

　　再看几个例句：

　　Il lit dans le journal la chronique mondaine.

　　He is reading the gossip column in the paper.

　　他在读报纸上的八卦专栏。(都是有关名人的吧?^v^)

　　C'est l'événement mondain organisé par le gouvernment.

　　It's a social event organized by the government.

　　这是政府组织的社交活动。

　　Le Festival se voulait mondain, plutôt que cinéphile.

　　The Festival is more of a social gala than a cinematic event.

　　电影节其实主要是个社交盛会，而不是个(简单的)电影活动。

　　Depuis que mon mari a été nommé directeur, je suis obligée de mener une vie très mondaine.

　　I’ve had a very busy social life since my husband became managing director.

　　自从我丈夫当上了执行董事，我就开始应对繁忙的社交活动。

　　Vanessa est très mondaine. Pour rien au monde, elle ne raterait cette garden-party.

　　Vanessa is a great socialite / loves the social round / the social whirl. She wouldn’t miss that garden party for anything.

　　温妮莎酷爱社交生活。为参加那个花园酒会，她会不惜一切。

　　相比之下，现代英语中的“mundane”的“俗事”就没那么风光啦——它指平民百姓的世俗生活，日常琐事。所以，英语的“mundane”就意为“平凡，寻常，乏味”，常译为法语的“banal, ordinaire, prosaïque” 等。例如：

　　Penelope considers that such mundane tasks as ironing and washing-up are beneath her dignity.

　　Pénélope estime que des tâches aussi prosaïques que le repassage et la vaisseille sont indignes d’elle.

　　珀涅罗珀不屑于干象熨衣服，洗碗之类的平凡活计。

　　Our life must seem terribly mundane to a glamorous actress like her.

　　Une actrice aussi prestigieuse qu’elle doit trouver notre vie très banale /ordinaire /monotone.

　　象她这样风光的演员肯定会觉得我们的生活太乏味。

　　The days at school were familiarly mundane.

　　A l’école, les journées se passaient de manière fort banale.

　　学校生活非常无聊。

　　We recognize that teaching even the most mundane things is also a way of teaching values.

　　Nous reconnaissons qu'enseigner même les choses les plus triviales est aussi une façon d'enseigner les valeurs.

　　我们认识到，在教学中，再平常，再普通的内容也包含了价值观。

　　最后，再总结一下：

　　不同的"俗世“，不同的“俗事”。

　　历史学家认为，英国文化受清教影响，反对高调张扬的奢侈享乐，要求禁欲、勤奋，谨言慎行，所以，北方的“俗事”就有点“乏味“啦;而南方的天主教文化，则提倡乐享人生，人际交往也较少拘束，社交活动发达，于是，就有了“香槟，沙龙，红地毯”之类 “mondain”的东西啦。
